Character Development/Model Sheets

Before artists start animating a character they have determined how that character looks and acts in different situations and poses. A model sheet shows different views of the character and different expressions so that all the animators working on a certain character can keep their drawings consistent. Sometimes there are notes written on the model sheet to clarify how a certain part is drawn.

Students are to draw a model sheet for an original character of their own design. This may be helpful if they decide to use the character in our flip book or other animation assignments. The model sheet must include 3 views of the head (front, side, and three-quarters), 4 expressions that illustrate emotions or thoughts, and two drawings of the character's body in different poses and positions.
