Clay Shrinkage Test

Students are to make 3 small slabs of clay measuring between 1x1 and 4x4 centimeters. A chart is given so students can write the size of the wet slabs, bone dry slabs and the size of the slabs after firing. There is also space to figure out the percent that each tile shrinks from wet to fired. Each student figures out the average shrinkage of all three tiles and shares it with the class after which a class average is determined.

Evaluation:

3 points are awarded for accurate data from each tile and an additional point is awarded for correctly figuring the overall average percent of shrinkage in their tiles.
