Graffiti Art

Now that students have a basic grasp of one and two point perspective, they are shown how to apply perspective techniques to lettering. An excellent video about Graffiti Artists is shown in class as a primer and to illustrate the wide variety of styles that Spray Can Art encompasses.

Next students are shown how to make lines have 3-D form. Students draw on their paper as the teacher illustrates on the board. Starting with a zig zag line, students draw a similar line just below it and connect the two with straight lines. This gives the lines a sense of three dimensionality. The same is done with a wavy line. Connecting the wave at different points will create the illusion that a banner is flapping in the wind (see illustration below). Next basic shapes are given form in the same way.

From there the class starts applying what they know about one and two point perspective to those basic shapes. The letters R and M are used to illustrate how letters can be made in perspective. The teacher also discusses and illustrates how to embellish letters with arrows or cut-outs or add-ons.

Coloring and inking lessons follow after students have some time to sketch out their Graffiti Words.

Evaluation:

3 points -- Correct use of 1 or 2 point perspectve
3 points -- Variation of line weight
2 points -- Nice picture or graphic included
2 points -- "inside" letter work (shading, objects, shapes, etc.)
10 Points total.
