Too Many Monsters

Finally students have the opportunity to be really creative while using their skills with line weight, perspective, and shading.

After reading the book, "Too Many Monsters" by Eve Bunting, in class for inspiration, the teacher draws on the board while students follow along duplicating the teacher's drawings. The teacher illustrates how easy it is to draw Eyes, Hands, Tentacles, Claws, cartoon faces, and bodies. Each example is made up of simple geometric shapes that the students know from prior assignments. See example below.

Students are to draw a monster in a setting that utilizes perspective. A written explanation of their monster's "powers" or "special abilities" must be included with the finished drawing.

Evaluation:
2 points -- Correct use of perspective
3 points -- Monster and background details
3 points -- Shading to indicate color and 3-dimenstionality
2 points -- Written explanation
