Single Object Still Life

Before one can draw an object one must understand the object and know what it is, what it looks like, and how light plays off it's surfaces. Before drawing the object, the class discusses it and tries to describe it verbally so that anyone who has not seen the object will still get a vivid and accurate idea of what the object is and what it looks like. The teacher demonstrates how to quickly sketch the basic shapes of the object, how to make sure it fits on the paper, and how to shade the object realistically. Students are then ready to begin on their own paper.

Evaluation:
2 points -- 25 written descriptions
2 points -- Proportion
3 points -- Contrast (ability to see objects in the drawing from a distance)
3 points -- Shading according to the light source(s)
