Tubes and Pipes Shading Exercise

Students take part in a demonstration on how to use the ellipse templates to draw pipes and tubes. After a short practice session going over various sized tubes and curved tubes, students are to fill their paper with a variety of connected tubes and pipes, then shade them to give a sense of three-dimentionality.

We also discuss how the lines on tubes determine whether things are coming out toward the viewer or going away from the viewer. The images below illustrate this: 1. Incorrect. The twisty tube is shown receding but the connection is in front of the other tubes.
2. Correct. This one shows how the twisty tube actually in front of the straight connection tube.
3. Correct. If the straight connection tube is in front of the twisty tube, then the segments should be represented like they are here in number 3.

Evaluation:

1 pt -- Use of Class time
1 pt -- All pipes connected in some way
2 pts -- At least 4 curved pipes with segments
2 pts -- Paper filled with tubes and pipes
4 points -- Smooth shading to create volume/3-D
Total 10 points
