Setting up an Account on Flickr

Setting up your Flickr Account

We will be using Flickr.com to backup your photos and share them with the class or others. It's easy to set up an account on Flickr.com, just click here. (Flickr is part of Yahoo, so if you have a Yahoo email or IM account, you may be able to simply sign in. If not, simply click the above link and follow the directions to sign up.)

When creating your name and password, DO NOT forget it.

If you've successfully signed up at Yahoo, you should see a screen similar to this:

Now either click the "print account details" link to print your info or make a screen shot of this page and email it to yourself (To take a picture of the screen, use the following key combination "Command, Shift, 4", then hold the mouse button down and drag the cursor over the section of the page you want to save. When you let go a file titled, "Picture1.png" (or something similar) will appear on your desktop. This is the picture you want to email to yourself.) so you have a copy in case you forget your yahoo id. You might want to write down your password somewhere as well unless you're sure to remember it.

Now click the "Continue" button or go to www.flickr.com and click the sign in link.

Once you're signed in to Flickr you will need to set up your profile if you haven't yet. Start by creating a screen name and click "Create New Account".

The next page that comes up looks like this:

Click the Personalize your Profile link first to set up your account and the address at which people can view the photos you upload. Please check to make sure your profile and any pictures you upload are marked "public" so we can search for your screen name and add comments to your photos. (We will comment on other people's Flickr photostreams as we get further along in the class.)

Uploading images to Flickr

You may upload photos saved on your computer. First, download the photos from your camera or the internet. (To save photos from the internet, click and drag the photos from the Safari window to your desktop) Click here for specific instructions on how to save and print photos from Flickr.

If you're uploading a photo you've worked on in Photoshop, you should first convert that file from a Photoshop document (.psd) to Jpeg by selecting "Save As..." under the file menu, then choosing , "Jpeg" under the "Format" tab.

To upload photos to your account, first make sure you're signed in. Then click the Upload Photos and Video link on the right side of your Flickr window. (see below) Again, please make sure your photos are marked "public" so they can be shared with the class later.

After you upload some photos, add tags or comments or titles to them with your username so we can easily search for your username and find your photos.

Important: log out of Flickr before leaving the room!
